  1. Wow! I have no words. Mind you, in Australia we have similar stories when it comes to renaming places. It would be interesting to know what was the traditional name of this region/area before it became “Poverty Bay”.

    • There are seemingly loads of naming changes over here over time. I haven’t got my head around most but for some the idea seems really bizarre.

      Mount Taranaki near New Plymouth was called Mount Egmont (apparently named after some British fella who never even came to NZ from what I heard)…but I have only ever heard one person call it Egmont…

      I wonder sometimes if it boils time to stubborn British behaviour…”we can’t pronounce that so let’s call it something else”…thankfully the world has changed a bit over time.
