I recently tried eating something called “Titi” which is apparently a Sooty Shearwater chick which is taken before it has fledged (also called Muttonbird – a Maori tradition). I was at the excellent Fleur’s Place in the village of Moeraki (north of Dunedin).
I ordered it with no idea of what it might taste of simply because it was on the menu. As it was delivered to my table I was asked if I had eaten Titi before and was told that it tasted a bit like a combination of duck and anchovies (have I just put you off?) and that I would be best to pick it up and get stuck in. Anyway, while I didn’t take a photo I can tell you that such a simple meal was one of the best meals I have ever had! Who would have thought a seabird would be so great!?!
Another top meal was when I had Baltimore crabs…in Baltimore. Such a simple dish of crab and fries but it was fantastic.
And after that…I am not sure…but I always have a soft spot for Cornish pasty, chips, peas and gravy! Not freely available in NZ!
Variety is the spice of life. Try something new if you get the chance!
