Just to the East of Auckland lies the holiday hotspot of the Coromandel Peninsula. A haven for Aucklanders itching to get away from it all without going too far.
I sometimes feel you get spoiled for scenery in New Zealand as everywhere is so pretty which is perhaps why Coromandel didn’t have a massively profound effect on me. I was told by numerous people that it would be really busy as we went around Christmas time but the crowds must have been somewhere else (thankfully) or the Kiwi perception of busy is different to my own.
Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach are 2 of the attractions…along with Driving Creek Railway where a potter built his own railway over many years to extract clay which became a tourist attraction. Forgive the slightly voyeuristic photo of the seagulls but I couldn’t resist!
