There is a very unusual place on the East coast of the South Island, around 40km to the South of Oamaru…the small fishing village of Moeraki. Just outside the village (to the North) lie the Moeraki Boulders.
The boulders are not far from being perfect spheres embedded in the beach…something of a geographical mystery. You can park up (for free) and just amble along a gorgeous long beach and then are free to climb on or leap along the huge rocks. They have something of a honeycomb centre which just makes them more interesting.
The pictures may spoil the surprise a touch but do pay them a visit if you get the chance. The sight of the Pacific swirling around the boulders and the beautiful coastline is simply superb.
