I am not sure if the British are world famous for talking about the weather with anyone who will listen…especially as an ice breaker…my goodness it can be boring at times…and yet we never cease to engage in weather chatter throughout the day.
In New Zealand it is just as bad! Who would believe it?
Crowded House, of New Zealand, recorded the song “Four Seasons in One Day” which is pretty appropriate for the weather here (they also recorded “Weather With You”). I haven’t been here long but I have already seen wind, sun, rain etc all on the same day. It is variable to say the least.
There was a lovely moment one morning when there was fog hovering over the harbour with the sun shining through and many locals turned to photograph the scene from the bus on the harbour bridge. Isn’t that something? Sadly I was without camera.
So, variable weather makes it a bit more interesting to talk about as you really don’t know how to dress for the day ahead (the Met Service seem to helpfully recommend numbers of clothing layers for you on their site!). Add to that the fact that it can vary massively across the length of the nation and you have further talking points…especially given the strangely competitive nature of those living outside Auckland to the South where the climate is cooler.
Just recently, there has been snow on the South Island and sunny temperatures in the teens in Auckland…you wouldn’t get that in the UK!
So, in conclusion, if you want to make small talk with a stranger in the UK or NZ…they will only be too happy (or indeed miserable) to chat about the weather with you!
