As promised in my last post, here are some initial photos of the Auckland area to give a flavour of the city and its surroundings…it is beautifully situated around the harbour and the volcanic cones dotted on the landscape…and this is just scratching the surface of New Zealand in week 1!
There are of course some questions to come out of these…did Queen Victoria ever see a palm tree in her lifetime? How old are the older buildings in the city? How likely is it that a volcano will erupt while I am here?
For those who are interested, we were told that the Sky Tower, which is the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, was only completed in 1997. As New Zealand is a young country, the older buildings will not be over 200 years old – it is rather nice how they intermingle with modern towers. There is a very relaxed feeling as you walk around – something which continues as you leave the centre and the shot of my wife walking on the beach with Rangitoto Island in the background is very calming!
The climate has been around 22 centigrade since we arrived with lovely sea breezes to keep you cool. Not humid either which is great! Enjoy!
